South African Literary Awards keeps its commitment to nurture literary talent in South Africa

For two decades, SALA has promoted inclusivity, amplified diverse voices, and upheld literature as a living expression of heritage and identity.

This year, the South African Literary Awards (SALA) celebrate their 20th anniversary. A milestone that coincides with heritage month, and underscores the role of literature as a cornerstone of the country’s cultural life.

Founded in 2005, SALA has grown into South Africa’s most prestigious platform for recognising literary excellence across genres, languages, and generations.

Over the past two decades, the awards have honoured more than 300 authors, whose works embody the spirit, struggles, and aspirations of South Africa and Africa at large.

For Professor Zodwa Motsa, chairperson of the SALA Advisory Board and vice-principal for teaching and learning at UNISA, the anniversary is as much about heritage as it is about literature. “Heritage month reminds us that our identity is not singular, but shared across languages, cultures, and generations. SALA, by honouring literary excellence in all South Africa’s languages, has helped build this shared heritage for 20 years.”

This September, more than 30 adjudicators will meet to finalise the list of nominees following a robust response to the 20th anniversary call for submissions.

The winners will be announced at a celebratory ceremony on November 7, which is also the 34th anniversary of International African Writers’ Day.

Over the years, SALA’s contribution has been wide-ranging, from recognising multilingual excellence, spotlighting emerging talent, and honouring literary icons, to championing Pan-African solidarity by acknowledging works that transcend borders.

“As we celebrate 20 years, we look to the future with renewed energy,” said executive director and founder of SALA Morakabe Raks Seakhoa. “SALA will continue to be a home for writers, readers, and communities who believe in the power of the written word to unite, heal, and inspire.”
