Opening of the I Love Film exhibition

Sharon Henry, general manager of Morningside Shopping Centre, Alexi Portokallis, photographer and Dennis da Silva, photographic hand printer, cuts the ribbon to open the exhibition.

The official opening of the black and white I Love Film photography exhibition recently took place at the Morningside Shopping Centre.

More than 40 photographers will showcase their work from 6 to 14 September shot entirely on film and guests attended the opening in celebration of the technique and artistry of pre-digital photography.

All the photographs on display will be hand-processed and printed in a dark room by Dennis da Silva, one of the few remaining hand photo printers in the country.

Alexi Portokallis, organiser and photographer, said film photography offers a different perspective on the world.

“It slows you down; it teaches you to stand still and to appreciate the moment and take the perfect shot because you only have 36 shots in one film roll.”

Portokallis said he began shooting from an iPhone and his passion quickly grew when he took part in a weekend workshop and discovered the joys of film.

A series of talks was hosted at the official opening for seasoned photography enthusiasts and curious beginners, by industry experts.

Sharon Henry, general manager of the centre said they are looking forward to hosting a unique exhibition while profiling the work of talented photographers. “Black and white photography shot on film is especially captivating because it lends a timeless quality to the images and we are delighted to be able to share this with our shoppers.”
