The Sandton Guardians together with security companies recently apprehended eight suspects for alleged cable theft that occurred in Kelvin.
According to David de Villiers one of ZSS Security’s response officers, he was patrolling the area and noticed suspicious behaviour by people on Old Pretoria Road. “He radioed in for backup and the Sandton Guardians were notified. We managed to apprehend eight suspects and recover a bakkie full of cables.”
“The suspects were taken to Sandton Police Station and an investigation is ongoing,” said De Villiers.
Prem Byjnal of the Sandton Guardians who responded to the incident said upon arrival they saw a group of guys walking towards Marlboro. “They had dropped the cables and were trying to escape. We gave chase and together with security managed to surround and apprehend the suspects.”
He said they found three more guys hiding when they searched the bushes. “The sector vehicle arrived and arrested the suspects.
“I offered to load up the cables and take it to the police station. We bundled up roughly 500m of cable.”
Bynjal said the Sandton Guardians create awareness and assist where they can and they are appealing to the community to get involved in order to spread the load.
Brigadier Egen Moodley, station commander at the station, confirmed the arrests of the suspects after they allegedly attempted to steal cables. He said the arrests were made with the help of all the roleplayers, ZSS Security, ADT, Duma, Sandton Guardians together with the sector vehicle.
