‘Where are the cops when you need them?’

Motorists are concerned about the number of crime incidents at William Nicol drive intersections.

Jamie Gilberson, who uses the road every day, said it is sad how the matter has not been resolved. “Almost every day people are getting robbed in traffic between Sandton Drive and Republic. Where are the cops for protection?” she asked.

According to Captain Granville Meyer, spokesperson for the Sandton Police Station, the police know about the situation. “We are aware of incidents happening in that area. Our members are deployed… [there] on a daily basis,” he said.

It is said that these incidents occur mostly during peak-hour traffic. “It mostly happens in the evenings during peak hour, it is safe to stay on the outside lanes and keep a gap in front of you, so you can get away if need be and of course be aware,” said Gilberson.

Another resident, Jill Elfick, said about a month ago that she was involved in a smash-and-grab at the William Nicol and Republic Road robots. “It was on a Sunday at around 7pm, near the Thyme at the main entrance,” she said.

Another victim, Rosanne de Castro said her phone was stolen at the robots on Sandton Drive and William Nicol. “I had opened my window a little due to mist on the windscreen.

“Two guys came to my window and asked for my phone and when I tried negotiating with them not to take it, they showed me a gun and I had to give it up,” she said.

Even though road users feel like the police are not doing anything about the matter, Michael Sun, the Democratic Alliance public safety shadow MMC said Metro police patrol the area and will continue to do so to ensure there is a visible police presence to deter potential criminals.

“We have not made any arrests yet but JMPD together with Saps will continue to be on the lookout for any suspicious persons or activities at these intersections,” said Sun.

He added that motorists should be cautious at all times, and not leave their valuables lying around.
