Bryanston High School is currently hosting a large celebration to commemorate its 50th anniversary.

The celebration, which began on 27  and will end on 30 April, coincides with the annual KwaZulu-Natal rugby festival. It also features a variety of entertainment, food and market stalls as well as a children’s inflatable park.

The last time the school hosted an anniversary celebration was 25 years ago, so learners and staff are looking forward to hosting a large celebration of their school’s history.

Bronwynne Byrne, the marketing co-ordinator for the school, said for the past six months, staff members had been working hard to organise the festival. Teachers, parents and learners have also volunteered to help during the festival. The Grade 12 councillors will be in charge of the kiddies’ play area during the festival.

Performers, such as Abbott and Crabb as well as Soulfire and Fireflies will keep attendees entertained.

“It’s such a special school. Our learners and teachers are so happy here so we want to celebrate that. I know that a lot of people love the environment at the school, its very family orientated,” said Byrne.

An alumni assembly will see former principals of the school gathering to share memories from their time at the school. Alumni from all over the world will be travelling to celebrate the anniversary.

For fundraising, plates have been sold at the school for R10 each, and these will be laid out on the school’s main field. On 28 April at 3pm, skydivers will aim to land on the various plates. The person whose plate is landed on will win a cruise to the Portuguese Islands.

All of the funds raised from the festival will go towards upgrading the school’s facilities and various projects with which they are involved.

A special beer was also created by Copperlake Brewery, which was started by Old Boy, Brenden Watcham. People had the opportunity to vote for their favourite name for the beer, which included the names: True Blue, Hoopoe Gold (the bird on the school’s logo) and Blue Brew. Ultimately Bryanston Gold was voted the winning name.

Bryanston High School’s councillors will be volunteering during the 50th-anniversary celebrations.
