Bryanston garden refuse site continues to be a pain for residents

Vehicles lined up to dump garden refuse at the Bryanston Pikitup site.

The Pikitup garden refuse site in Bryanston remains a sore point for residents in the area, with illegal street vendors hugging the perimeter walls, and long traffic queues blocking 1st Road.

Ward 103 councillor Vincent Earp has received a number of complaints from Bryanston residents who are concerned about the apparent deteriorating state of affairs developing outside the site.

“The Pikitup Garden Site is a mess, and I have reported it to Pikitup. There is a large mound of garden cuttings that are piled higher than the surrounding walls, vehicles were lined up trying to dump material. The vendors on the corner continue to harass residents for items that they can sell. I have reported this to the JMPD. With the heat that we are experiencing at the moment, the area should be cleaned daily as it is in the middle of a residential area,” said Earp.

Local resident Steven McAllister told the Sandton Chronicle that there have been some scary incidents at the garden refuse dump site.

“Last year we had lots of problems with vagrants and drug dealers. It seems that nothing much has changed. Residents are being harassed by illegal street traders, and with the current heat wave, I suspect that we will have another episode of noxious odours spewing out of the dump site and into our homes and businesses,” he said.

Informal traders and vagrants line the perimeter walls of the site.

Earp also said it was Metro police’s responsibility to remove the vendors who are taking over the sidewalks.
