Google Pixel Buds make real-time language translation a reality

The wireless headphones are designed to pair with the new Pixel 2 device, making Google Assistant even more easily accessible to help you in a number of different ways. Just a simple tap on the right earpiece is all that’s needed to direct the virtual assistant to send a text, make a call and even listen to music. However it is the assistant’s ability to speak and translate over 40 languages that really made it a game changer at the event.

The device can speak anything from Portuguese, Japanese, Dutch, Korean, to Norwegian, or any other of the 40 languages available on the Pixel Buds. Google Translate has used machine learning to create what is virtually a personal translator that can travel anywhere in the world with you. It the most advanced and ground-breaking application of translation software to date.

During the presentation, Google demonstrated how the earbuds work by translating a conversation between two users from Swedish to English and vice versa. When one user spoke Swedish into her pixel buds, the English translation could be heard from Pixel Bud’s front two speakers. The presenter responded to the woman in English, which she heard in her native language through the headphones in real time. The buds also have the capability to record a copy of the conversation for future reference.

The earbuds work simply by holding the right earbud and saying, for example, “help me speak Spanish”. The next time you speak, the Buds will then play the translation out loud in Spanish. If someone speaks Spanish to you, the Buds will play the translation back to you in English.

The Buds come in a simple design that is compact and easy to charge. They complement Google Pixel or Android phone. They’ve got a unique fabric loop, making them comfortable, secure, and quick to adjust without having to swap out pieces. They have put all the audio controls into a touchpad on the right earbud, so there aren’t any buttons hanging on the cord.
