HYDE PARK – Its ease of access makes it an ideal address for home owners
When people talk about the northern suburbs, Hyde Park is often top of the list. The suburb of Hyde Park lies wedged between Beyers Naude Drive and Rivonia Drive, north of Bompas Road in Dunkeld. Its name comes from London’s well-regarded area, Hyde Park and much like its London counterpart, it too enjoys similar prestige and status.
Besides its houses fortified by elevated walls and state-of-the-art security, Hyde Park is the perfect location as it is in the midst of the northern suburbs – Melrose Arch, Illovo, Rosebank, Sandton, and of course Hyde Park Shopping Centre. This ease of access coupled with the size of the properties is what makes the suburb so sought after.
Hyde Park has the added advantage of proximity to Sandton and Johannesburg CBDs, as well as the exclusive shops and entertainment venues in Hyde Park Corner, Sandton City and Thrupps Centre in Illovo. Literally just minutes away from the Sandton CBD, Hyde Park has managed to preserve some of its key agricultural and rural elements from back in the day. This is evident in the quietness that runs through the suburb as well as the tree-lined streets.
Despite being so close to the big main roads, Hyde Park still manages to offer a serene environment.
The homes here remain luxurious and large and, for the most part, have very high walls that provide extra privacy. Such properties usually enjoy the benefits of shared resources such as managed services and high-tech security systems. This means that residents don’t have to worry about individually having to upkeep the grounds and monitor security.
For many years now Hyde Park Corner has been home to some of the most prominent high-end fashion retail outlets and boutiques curated to meet the standard of the residents. Sunday brunch at one of the many restaurants and delis is nothing out of the ordinary for residents as well as those who travel to experience this.
In addition, when it comes to schools, residents can choose from a number of excellent public and private schools, including Hyde Park High, St David’s, Pridwin, Sandown High, Kingsmead and Crawford College.
Many share the opinion that Hyde Park has an undeniably ‘old money’ ambience. However, much like many of the other older central suburbs in Johannesburg in recent years, Hyde Park is experiencing a gradual change in its residents, with younger executives and professionals who have ‘new money’ moving in.
With so much development taking place on the north side, owning property here could be kind on the return on investment.
