Sandton police provide community members with safety tips

Constable David Mothapo, spokesperson for Sandton Police Station.

Constable David Mothapo, the spokesperson for the station, advised those being followed to always remain vigilant and to not loose sight of the suspected follower.

Mothapo said, “If you are driving home and you believe you may be targeted at the gate, pass and drive to the nearest police station or a public place where there are people, then call the police.

“Do not attempt to confront the suspected criminals but call the police.” If it is possible, get the details of the vehicle such as the make, colour, registration number and number of occupants, then notify the police.

“Always keep your valuables locked up in the boot and keep them out of sight.”

Mothapo advised community members to drive to the nearest police station or a safe public if they are stopped by bogus police. “You can use a hand signal to ask them to follow you.”

On the recent Uber conflicts, Mothapo said that police have noted that there have been complaints from those using Uber and metered taxis of harassment. “We, therefore, appeal to the passengers to come forward and report such incidents of intimidation and harassment.”

He said the police will not hesitate to arrest anyone who will be found to have perpetrated a crime.

“We also advise the drivers of such taxis to report any crime that is committed against them and we will take the necessary steps to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

“We are also ensuring that there are constant police visibility and patrols in the area as well as conducting random stop and searches to ensure the safety of both passengers and drivers as well as everyone else.”

Mothapo urged community members who suspect any illegal activities taking place in their area to notify the police immediately.
