Miss SA escapes attempted hijacking in Hyde Park after fending off a suspect

Miss South Africa, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, escaped an attempted hijacking incident on the evening of 7 June on Jan Smuts Avenue in Hyde Park.

She exited the vehicle after three armed suspects approached her car. According to the Miss South Africa office, a passing motorist helped Nel-Peters by driving her away from the scene.

They also confirmed that her car and handbag were recovered at the scene by a security company.

Detective Coordinator for Joburg north cluster, Andre De Klerk said, “It seems it was a smash and grab. She was confronted by 5 young and poorly dressed men. Two allegedly pointed firearms at her and demanded her cell phone. She got out of the car and got physical with one of the suspects. She then took her car keys and ran back to Hyde Park shopping centre. Her handbag was returned to her, however her cell phone is still missing.”
