LETTER: An honest word goes a long way

Jacqui Thompson, a Morningside resident, writes:

Thank you for such a lovely, thought-provoking column, Talk Time: From the editor, Week ending 28 October.

I could really relate to what you said about possibly causing the deaths of three innocent creatures. I’ve had countless birds and lizards electrocuted on my electric fence. Birds killed flying into our windows, and spiders, snakes, beetles and bugs killed by frightened and uneducated staff. I’m working on the latter, but I still know that just by having a structure in an environment which used to be home to other creatures means I am having a negative impact. I try to compensate by not using chemicals or pesticides in my garden, putting bird and nectar feeders up, planting only indigenous plants and erecting nesting logs.

I get fed up when I hear the lame phrase, ‘We let nature take its course’, as that is such nonsense. We have damaged and destroyed so much. We should help wherever and however we can.

I was very touched by your column and I found it empathetic and interesting, and you took the time to add useful telephone numbers which was also helpful.

Thank you.
